Battle Creek, Mich.- Fr. Dave Dwyer, CSP, popular host of ÒThe Busted Halo Show,Ó heard nightly on SiriusXM radio, is the keynote speaker for this yearÕs Community Prayer Breakfast. Blending wisdom and humor, Dwyer will inspire breakfast participants to pursue faith in God, regardless of personal circumstances or failures.
The theme of this yearÕs breakfast is ÒNobodyÕs Perfect: Share Your Faith Anyway.Ó
The 30th Annual Community Prayer Breakfast will be held from 7:25 to 9 a.m., Tuesday, May 10, at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. Tickets cost $15 per person and may be purchased by calling 269.969.2120.
ÒFr. Dave has a unique ministry, aimed at young adults who have either not been part of a congregation or have fallen away from participation in a church community,Ó said Samantha Pearl, who is co-chairing this yearÕs Breakfast with her husband, Jim.
Dwyer directs Busted Halo¨, the Paulist ministry and media outreach to young adult Catholics. On his ÒThe Busted Halo¨ Show,Ó heard nightly on Sirius XM satellite radio, Dwyer answers listenersÕ faith questions. He also publishes BustedHalo.com¨, a web magazine -for spiritual seekers- which features articles on entertainment, lifestyle, relationships, politics and popular culture. His dynamic and relevant preaching is especially popular with young adults.
ÒHe encourages questions about personal faith, organized religion and how to live a faith-based life in an increasingly secular society,Ó Samantha Pearl said.
Dwyer addresses audiences
nationwide, giving advice about reconnecting young adults with their faith, and
he has offered commentary in The New York Times and Newsweek. He has
also appeared on CNN, NBC
Nightly News, and The Daily Show
with Jon Stewart.
Dwyer served in campus ministry at the Universities of Colorado and Texas, and has developed young adult ministry programs for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA. Prior to his May 2000 ordination, he directed television for MTV and Comedy Central, and worked as a disc jockey for a hit music station, where he was known as ÔHappy Dave.Õ
ÒFr. Dave will encourage Breakfast participants to reach out to others in our community in authentic ways, by sharing our faith with them,Ó Jim Pearl said. ÒWe will benefit from his experience with using current communication and social networking tools to share our journeys of faith with those who are hungry for more meaning and purpose in their lives.Ó
Since its beginning in 1982 by Dr. Russell Mawby and Dr. Paul Gieser, the Community Prayer Breakfast has encouraged all participants to speak and pray in a way that is true to their personal beliefs. It is asked that those attending use this opportunity to listen to individuals whose beliefs might be different from their own to gain understanding and an appreciation of the participantÕs faith.
The Prayer Breakfast is organized by more than two dozen volunteers, dedicated to bringing the community together in a shared demonstration of faith. It provides an opportunity for community to draw closer to God and to each other. The event consistently draws more than 1,200 people, including more than 300 youth.
The
breakfast cost remained the same for 29 years, but-since the cost of the event
has nearly doubled in that time- it has become necessary to change the
individual ticket to $15. Those wishing to
make a tax-deductible contribution to help underwrite the event, and pay for
area high school students to attend at no cost, may send a check, payable to
BCCF/Community Prayer Breakfast, to: The Community Prayer Breakfast, PO Box
4363, Battle Creek, MI.49016-4363. Those who donate $200 or more will receive
two tickets to a reception in honor of Fr.Dave Dwyer at the W.K.Kellogg
Foundation the evening prior to the breakfast.
