"Who Am I Now?"

Community Prayer Breakfast to Feature Former Major League Baseball Player Dave Dravecky

The 23rd Annual Community Prayer Breakfast is pleased to announce former Major League baseball player Dave Dravecky, as the speaker for this year's Prayer Breakfast.

The 2004 Community Prayer Breakfast will be held at the Kellogg Arena in downtown Battle Creek on Tuesday, May 4 from 7:25 to 9:00 a.m. Breakfast tickets are $10 per person and may be obtained by calling (269) 969-2194 or the Community Box Office (269) 441-2710. The morning's theme and the title of Dravecky's remarks is "Who Am I Now?"

In his seventh year in Major League Baseball while pitching for the San Francisco Giants, a cancerous tumor was discovered in Dravecky's pitching arm. Eventually his arm was amputated to stop the spread of the cancer and save his life.

In response to the thousands of requests they received from hurting people encouraged by the Dravecky's faith, Dave and his wife, Jan, founded the Outreach for Hope ministry in 1991. The mission of the ministry is to offer comfort, encouragement and hope through Jesus Christ to those who suffer from cancer, amputation or serious illness. The mission is accomplished by offering prayer support, referral services and resources for those who are suffering and their families.

They are also the best selling authors of eight different inspirational books in addition to publishing The Encourager, a national magazine that addresses the emotional and spiritual aspects of suffering. The Dravecky's were also general editors, along with Joni Eareckson Tada, of The Encouragement Bible, a specialty version of the New International Version Bible. Dave has also co-authored two books on baseball, Play Ball and Called Up.

Dave Dravecky has been speaking professionally for the past decade, delivering inspirational and motivational speeches to a wide variety of audiences across the country. Through his personal experience, he addresses loss and suffering, faith, encouragement and hope, reaching out to others, and saying good-bye to the past. He has been the featured speaker at Procter & Gamble, Orlando, FL; White House Staff Bible Study, Washington, D.C.; Sam Houston University, Huntsville, TX; and Jackson National Life, Lansing, MI and Denver, CO.

Since its beginning in 1982, the Community Prayer Breakfast has encouraged all participants to speak and pray in a way that is true to their personal faith. It is asked that those attending use this opportunity to listen to individuals whose beliefs might be different from their own to gain an understanding and an appreciation of the participant's faith. A successful breakfast will give our community an opportunity to draw nearer to God and to each other.

Those wishing to make a tax-deductible contribution to help defray the hosting and student-sponsorship costs may send a check payable to BCCF/Community Prayer Breakfast to: The Community Prayer Breakfast, P.O. Box 4363, Battle Creek, MI 49016-4363. Those who wish to donate $250 or more will receive two tickets to a reception in honor of Mr. Dravecky at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation the evening before the Breakfast. Please contact Pam Hurley at 269-969-2142 for more information.
