1998 Walk for Warmth
 
WHAT: 13th Annual Walk for Warmth
Three mile outdoor walk, three mile indoor walk, 5K run, and aerob-a-thon
WHEN: Saturday, February 28, 1998 
Registration begins at 9:00a.m. / Opening Ceremony at 9:45 a.m.
Events begin at 10:00a.m.
WHERE: Full Blast, 35 Hamblin Avenue, Battle Creek, Michigan
WHO: You, your friends, your family, your neighbors, your co-workers, and the Community Action Agency of South Central Michigan.
WHY: Without the Walk for Warmth, hundreds of families in South Central Michigan would have no heat in their homes this winter.
LAST YEAR: 400 walkers and supporting sponsors raised over $21,600 in Battle Creek. With these funds, 270 individuals in our community were kept warm throughout the winter. The average assistance per family was $170.60.
 

 

WHO IS HELPED BY 
WALK FOR WARMTH?  
  • Recipients of Walk for Warmth funds raised in the greater Battle Creek area are low-income, elderly, and disabled residents of this area.
  • The average annual income of households receiving Walk for Warmth assistance in 1997 was $6,113.
  • The average Calhoun County resident spent 7.2% of their income to heat their home in the winter; a Walk for Warmth recipient spent 25%.
  • Half of those who come to CAA for heating assistance are employed or only recently unemployed.
  • 10% of recipients were elderly; 28% were disabled; 27% lived alone.
  • If recipients are able, they are encouraged to volunteer their time to the Walk for Warmth to help others in need of emergency assistance.
